Saturn-Neptune and the Obama Family

Posted by on Thursday, January 15 20095 Comments

The Obama familyBarack Obama has a discernible pattern throughout his life involving the planets Saturn and Neptune in relation to his family. His mother was born with Saturn trine Neptune. His wife was born with Saturn square Neptune. His children were born with Saturn square Neptune and Saturn trine Neptune. Although we do not know his father’s birth date, we do know he was born in 1936, and Saturn did oppose Neptune that year.

Curiously, Barack Obama himself was not born at a distinct phase between Saturn and Neptune. His Saturn and Neptune are separated by 76 degrees and 44 minutes of arc. However his Sun and Moon link up with Saturn and Neptune in his chart, which may explain the particular significance it has for his family. The Sun, his father, and his own sense of fatherhood and the Moon, his mother, his wife and children. His Sun is square Neptune while his Moon is parallel to Saturn across the equinoxes (contra-antiscia), the equivalent some say of an opposition.

Let’s take a look at how Obama’s life coincided with different phases of the Saturn-Neptune cycle:

Saturn waxing sextile Neptune, 1959-1960

Saturn waxing sextile NeptuneAnn Dunham met Barack Obama Sr. in Hawaii sometime in 1960, Ann gives birth to Obama in the following year, on August 4th, 1961.

Saturn waxing square Neptune, 1962-1963

Saturn waxing square NeptuneBarack Obama Sr. left his wife Ann Dunham and son Barack Obama Jr. in June 1962, to go study at Harvard. Shortly afterward, Ann Dunham gets a divorce from Barack Obama Sr. On January 17th, 1964, In Chicago, Michelle Robinson was born.

Saturn waxing trine Neptune, 1966

Saturn trine NeptuneAnn Dunham met her second husband Lolo Soetoro in 1966 and got married in the following year and moved to Indonesia.

Saturn opposite Neptune 1971-1972

Saturn opposition NeptuneIn 1971, Ann sent her son Barack back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents. Obama’s separation from his mother affected him greatly. His grandfather, Stanley Durham was born on March 23rd, 1918, at a Saturn-Neptune conjunction. His grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, was born on October 26th, 1922, shortly before a Saturn-Neptune sextile.

When Barack returned to Hawaii, his father Barack Obama Sr. visited him for a short while. It was the last time Barack would ever see his father. In 1972, Ann returned to Hawaii and reunited with her son for several years.

Saturn waning trine Neptune, 1977

Saturn trine NeptuneIn 1977, Ann wanted to go back to Indonesia. Obama chose to stay in Hawaii and finish high school. So again, mother and son became separated.

Saturn waning square Neptune, 1979-1980

Saturn waxing square NeptuneBarack Obama moved to Los Angeles in 1979 to go to Occidental College. He was now living on his own, separated from his parents and grandparents. Ann Dunham divorced Lolo Soetoro sometime in 1980.

Saturn waning sextile Neptune 1982

Saturn waxing sextile NeptuneBarack Obama Sr. died in a car crash on November 24th, 1982.

Saturn conjunct Neptune, 1989

Saturn conjunct NeptuneIt was June 1989, and a bright young Harvard-educated lawyer named Michelle Robinson was assigned to mentor a new summer intern who was creating a lot of buzz around the office. His name was Barack Obama.  The short version of the story is they began dating.

What is interesting is how Obama describes Michelle. He calls her his “rock”. His stabilizing influence while he is out there captivating the world, daring people to dream. Saturn is the planet of concreteness, reality, practicality, stability. Neptune is the planet of dreams, ideals, fantasy, illusion. And so the coming together of Saturn and Neptune symbolizes quite literally the union of the “rock” and the “dreamer”. Barack is basically Neptune, and Michelle is Saturn.

This is confirmed by their synastry and transits. Barack has Sun square Neptune, he came to national prominence when Neptune opposed his Sun, and ran for President when Neptune was on his Ascendant.  Michelle’s Sun is conjunct his Saturn, and her Saturn is on his Ascendant. They got married in October 1992 when Saturn opposed Barack’s Sun.

Some of you may be wondering, but gee, isn’t Saturn not the best planet to have stamped all over your marriage? Wouldn’t that indicate distance and time apart and hardships? I would say to you, hasn’t there been plenty of that in their marriage because of his career? It was only at the opposition that she realized they could be together more by being an integral part of his career.

Saturn waxing sextile Neptune 1995

Saturn waxing sextile NeptuneBarack Obama’s memoir “Dreams from My Father” was published on July 18th, 1995. Ann Dunham died of cancer on November 7th, 1995.

Saturn waxing square Neptune, 1998

Saturn waxing square NeptuneMichelle gives birth to their first child, Malia Ann Obama, on July 4th, 1998.

Saturn waxing trine Neptune, 2001

Saturn trine NeptuneMichelle gives birth to their second child, Sasha Obama, on June 10th, 2001.

Saturn opposition Neptune 2007

Saturn opposition NeptuneBarack Obama announced his presidential candidacy on February 10th, 2007, when the Sun was conjunct Neptune and opposite Saturn. The world got to know Obama’s family. Just under two years later, they would become the new First Family. Obama even wrote a letter to his children detailing that they were the reason he wanted to run for president:

When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me—about how I’d make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn’t seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own life wouldn’t count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours. In the end, girls, that’s why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation.

Other Curious Things

The most important people of his personal life have really strange astrological counterpoints in his  public life.

  • Ann Dunham, Barack’s mother, was born November 29th, 1942.
  • Joeseph Biden, Barack’s vice president, was born November 20th, 1942.
  • Michelle Obama was born January 17th, 1964.
  • Sarah Palin, was born February 11th, 1964.
  • While we do not know the exact birth date of his father, Barack Obama Sr., we do know that he was born in 1936.
  • John McCain was born on August 29th, 1936, with Saturn opposite Neptune.

Maybe these are just little cosmic jokes, or maybe this is something more. Was Obama figuratively running against his father when he ran against McCain? McCain was certainly running against the legacies of his father and grandfather. Obama’s memoirs were titled “Dreams from My Father”. McCain’s were titled “Faith of My Fathers”. Something clearly going on with Saturn-Neptune, Neptune (dreams, faith) and Saturn (fathers). And is his mother still watching over him through the eyes of Joe Biden? Who knows.  Sometimes the universe can be a lot stranger than we realize.

    Amazing. Intriguing interpretation. Love it.

  • […] President Obama announced his run for President on February 10th 2007 in Chicago, when not only was Neptune exactly on his Ascendant, but the Sun was conjunct Neptune on his Ascendant that day. Obama has quite a history with Neptune, and for many reasons detailed in this article “Barack Obama’s Rise To Power”, Obama is a very Neptunian character. Obama also has quite a family history with the Saturn-Neptune cycle, detailed in this article “Saturn-Neptune and the Obama Family”. […]

very interesting! i can across your article when looking for context for the saturn/neptune trine, the next of which is october 10 2012 (with two subsequent ones in 2013). curious how this may connect to obama as it will be less than 1 month before the 2012 elections. i guess we shall witness…….. namaste, stephanie

  • Patrick Watson says:

Very good, I’ve been thinking the same thing myself. It is definitely a factor we will have to understand before the 2012 elections. We will see.

  • Judith says:

Really appreciate your in-depth look at Obama’s life to give some context to their motivations and behavior. Michelle Obama’s Saturn contacts, especially the Saturn on his Ascendent, makes perfect sense. Saturn on his Ascendent suggests she forces him to shape up and give practical form to his dreams. She is the woman behind the sucessful man. Saturn contacts between spouses ensure that despite the difficulties and dissapointments you stick it out. Michelle resented her husband’s decision to run for the IL Senate because she wanted him to focus on making more money. She resented being home alone to raise their children while working when he was campaigning and downstate at the capital, but she stuck it out. (Source on this last bit was a Chicago Tribune article on her.)
