The Uranus-Pluto Square: What We’ve Seen So Far
I remember as early as 2005, astrologers have periodically discussed a fairly ominous outer planetary configuration as they looked ahead in their ephemerides: Uranus in Aries square Pluto in Capricorn. Ominous, because Uranus, the planet of idealistic revolution is in the war-like sign of Aries, which comes into a tense relationship with Pluto, the (dwarf) planet associated with extreme powers and control in the sign of Capricorn, a sign associated with structures and establishments such as governments and corporations. The conventional interpretation has been that basically sh*t would blow up and go down. Revolts against entrenched controlling powers. I’ve been somewhat reluctant to discuss it just because it’s been over-hyped and hyperbolized in the discussions I’ve seen about it, in a time when perhaps people could benefit from turning it down a notch with the apocalyptic proclamations. To some extent I couldn’t see how we could realistically expect what the configuration would seem to indicate, but oh how things change.
Now technically, the Uranus-Pluto aspect has not become exact yet, although geometrically speaking, they basically are close enough to a 90 degree separation to be in effect. It will perfect 7 times starting from June 24th 2012 to March 16th 2015. What this doesn’t mean is that the configuration is only in effect between those dates, nor does it mean we should be expecting 7 events to perfectly match up with each perfection with nothing in between. The outer planets signify general trends, so we have to avoid the tendency to connect everything and anything that happens while those planets are in orb to being signified by those planets in orb, only because Uranus and Pluto are so slow. However, in my experience, specific times that the trends of outer planetary transits are crystallized in the form of events which say something about the broader trend is when they are in hard aspect to the Sun, a lunation, an eclipse, or when they station retrograde or direct.
News International Phone Hacking Scandal
Earlier this year, News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch saw his media empire rattled to the core when a broad pattern of improper journalistic practices scandalized various News International publications he owned, even bringing down one of his newspapers News of the World. Worse for Murdoch was that it was not treated as an isolated incident, but a symptom of the overall culture of disregard for ethical standards in journalism and the relentless pursuit and promotion of sensationalist and politically-biased news that Murdoch helped to create. While the scandal has been years in the making, it seemed to center around the Sun’s transit through early Cancer in late June and early July of 2011, at which point it was opposing Pluto and squaring Uranus.
So here’s where things start getting weird. Rupert Murdoch was born on March 11th 1931, 11:59 pm in Melbourne, Australia, during the time period of the last Uranus-Pluto square, so he is experiencing a recurrence transit, but that’s not all. In 1964, Murdoch acquired his first newspaper, The Australian, his first step in his path toward becoming a media baron. Over the course of the Uranus-Pluto conjunction from 1965-1968, Murdoch completed his conquest of the media landscape in Australia. In late 1968, Murdoch expanded into the international market for the first time when he purchased, you guessed it, News of the World. On the left you’ll see Murdoch’s chart with his transits for his questioning by Parliament. Notice how not only is he having a Uranus-Pluto square recurrence transit, but Pluto has even been on his Ascendant for the past couple of years. It’s also quite appropriate that the Sun was on his Mars while Mars was square his Sun, given the public anger directed toward him, and the spotlight being put on his potential misdeeds.
It gets a little weirder though, because the other most prominent face of the scandal was the chief executive of News International and former editor of News of the World, Rebekah Brooks. She was born on May 27th 1968, unknown time, Warrington, England. In other words, she was born during the last Uranus-Pluto conjunction period. What are we seeing here? We saw cracks open in an establishment that seemed virtually invincible before. A completely entrenched power that was brought under public scrutiny, at least for a moment. We saw an extremely powerful figure humbled by the very thing that brought him to power. In other words, Uranus is fighting back against Pluto. And that leads us to probably the most obvious manifestation of Uranus-Pluto today.
“Occupy Wall Street” Protests
In mid-July 2011, anti-consumerist Canadian magazine Adbusters proposed a non-violent demonstration on Wall Street to be held on September 17th 2011 to protest corporate corruption of democracy, the growing disparity in wealth, and for corporate culpability for the 2008 recession. With the help of Anonymous, as well as pictures and videos of police brutality against the protesters being transmitted over the internet, the protest soon snowballed into a leaderless national and now global phenomenon, with “Occupations” taking place in many major cities in the United States and other countries worldwide. Although initially ignored by corporately-owned media, it is now being called a progressive Tea Party or even an “American Spring”, a reference to the Arab Spring which toppled governments in Tunisia, Egypt and now Libya. On the day the protest began, the Sun was in the process of moving into early Libra where it opposed Uranus and squared Pluto, just like how the phone hacking scandal came into focus. The fact that these protests are evocative of protest movements from the 1960’s is hardly surprising, especially since that was when Uranus and Pluto were last conjunct, and probably has a lot to do with the tumult and progress of that era.
What’s interesting about this is that we have already documented on this blog here about how the Arab Spring seemed to have been tied to eclipses configured with the planet Uranus which formed hard aspects to the position of the Sun on the dates of their respective declarations of independence. In particular I wondered what developments in revolutions would be signified by the last solar eclipse on July 1st 2011, since it was square Uranus and opposite Pluto. What I failed to acknowledge is that July 1st is just a few days away from July 4th, America’s Independence Day. Just like Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, the United States is fairly close to Uranus making a hard aspect to it’s own Declaration Sun. At the time of the last eclipse, the United States was very close to defaulting on its bills, I figured that’s all that it would be about, and it was to an extent. I have to admit though, part of me found it hard to believe that there really would be a revolution (Uranus) in resistance to the extreme powers on Wall Street (Pluto) on a level comparable to what happened in the Arab world, even though that is what the astrology clearly suggests.
What We’ll Continue To See
What’s amazing to me is that the aspect has not even perfected yet and we are already seeing this level of disruption to the entrenched powers. I think this is the kind of thing we’ll have to expect for the next several years while Uranus is square Pluto, especially when the Sun occupies the early degrees of the cardinal signs, in hard aspect to Uranus and Pluto, and to a greater extent when it involves a lunation or an eclipse, because that’s what seemed to spark the Arab Spring. However, there will not be any more eclipses configured with the Uranus-Pluto square until October 2014 and April 2015. I would also expect that the people who will come to the forefront of these coming developments will be “Uranus-Pluto people”: either people who were born during the past conjunction or square of Uranus and Pluto, people who were born with the Sun in hard aspect to Uranus or Pluto, or people with the Sun, Moon or Ascendant in the first half of cardinal signs where they will eventually be hit by the transiting Uranus-Pluto square. May we never live in dull times.
